5 Tips for Moving with Kids
Moving can be a stressful process, but it becomes even more chaotic when you have little ones in tow. Even older teens need extra support when leaving their old world behind. Whether you’re moving across town or to a new state, uprooting your kids can be a challenge for the whole family. As a parent, you want to make the transition as smooth and low-stress as possible for your children. Here are 5 tips for making a move easier when you have kids:
1. Get Them Involved Early
As soon as you decide to move, sit down with your kids and explain what’s happening. Use age-appropriate terms to describe the process, why you’re moving, and what your plan entails. You may even want to create a “moving story” book that has step-by-step illustrations or descriptions of what very young children can expect in the process. Once the idea has settled in, get your kids involved early. Have them start packing up their own rooms early on and at their own pace. Kids will feel more in control if they get to decide how to pack their personal belongings. Use fun stickers or colored tape to label their boxes. Give older teens their own moving supplies and allow them to manage their own space independently.

2. It’s Okay to Say Goodbye
If you’re leaving an area where your kids have spent a lot of time making friends and memories, acknowledge that it is hard to say goodbye. Give them space to express their feelings: It’s normal for kids to feel anxious, sad, or angry about moving. Validate their emotions and reminisce together. Consider hosting a small goodbye party. This gives them a chance to see buddies one last time and say farewell in a fun, positive way rather than having an abrupt goodbye.
3. Make A Plan for Moving Day
On moving day, it may be best to make arrangements for friends or sitters to watch smaller children. Keeping kids out of the hustle will make the day run more smoothly for all. If you need to include children on moving day, have a special backpack stuffed with their favorite books, snacks, toys, and activities. This will keep them comfortable and occupied during the chaos of loading the truck and traveling to your new home. As much as possible, try to maintain your kids’ normal routines, like sticking to nap/bedtimes and mealtimes. The consistency will help kids feel more grounded during the chaos.
4. Set Up Their Room First
When you arrive at your new place, set up your child’s bedroom and bathroom right away before unpacking anything else. Having a familiar, personal space established immediately can ease the transition into their new surroundings. Include them in the unpacking. Have them unpack a special moving day box with favorite stuffed animals, toys, books, games, and other comfort items. Consider giving older teens the freedom to design their own new space. Set up a budget for them to shop for small essentials to decorate their room.

5. Get Back to Routines Quickly
Children crave regularity and schedules. As soon as possible, get them re-enrolled in school, daycare, or regular activities to rebuild a normal routine in your new home. Set up time to tour new schools before the official first day. Introducing children to their new teachers and school staff can make that first day walking into the building less daunting. Research how to sign up for sports teams, local clubs or extracurricular activities. The faster you can get them on a consistent schedule, the easier the adjustment will be.
Making a Smooth Transition
Moving is always a big challenge, but it gets even trickier when you have kids in tow. With all the logistics, packing, and disruption to their routine, moving can be tough on little ones. However, taking a few proactive steps can ease their fears and make the transition smoother for everyone. No matter their age, making kids feel as safe, loved, and involved as possible is the key in the process. With preparation and patience, you can minimize moving stress and begin your new adventure with enthusiasm.
